What is a dental emergency?

When your dental health is at risk, sometimes you can not wait for treatment.  Common dental emergencies include:
-A broken Jaw
-Loose or lost fillings
-Cracked or broken teeth
-Severe toothache or pain
-Losing a permanent tooth
-Object caught between teeth
When you experience tooth pain or trauma, it's important to get medical attention as soon as possible.  If the nerves in your teeth become damaged, it can cause additional pain and increase your risk of infection.

What should I do if I lose a permanent tooth?

If you lose a permanent tooth, make an appointment with Dr. Martinez and his staff immediately.  While you wait, keep your tooth moist and handle it as little as possible.  If attainable, return the tooth into it's socket, bite down on a wet tea bag or some gauze to hold it in place.
You can also rinse the tooth off and save it in a small amount of milk or saliva until your appointment with Dr. Martinez.  To reduce bleeding from the tooth socket, a cold, wet compress can be applied.

What if I have a severe toothache?

While you wait for your appointment with Dr. Martinez, use warm water to rinse your mouth to remove any debris that might be in your teeth.  You might also try gently flossing to free food stuck between your teeth.
Don't apply pain relievers or aspirin to your teeth or gums.  Use a cold compress or ice pack held against the area to provide some relief.
